Designs and Proposals![]() Characteristics of the riverfront in Lower Town contribute both to its possibilities and its challenges. It is the riverfront closest to downtown Ann Arbor. However, it is bounded by railroad tracks and a four-lane bridge over the Huron River, making it difficult to reach. There are parks to either side of this part of the river, but the center link in the chain of parks is missing. Paths take bikers and runners from Fuller and Island Park to Riverside Park; Argo Park and Bandemer connect now with new paths along the west side of the river. A connection between Riverside Park and Broadway Park and along the west side of the River at Michcon could complete the greenway. The riverfont has been important as an industrial center since Ann Arbor was settled but the history of the industry and the mills is largely untold. Canoers travel down the millrace today without knowing the stories. Characteristics of the riverfront in Lower Town contribute both to its possibilities and its challenges. Design ideas are presented in site plans, which look at Broadway Park, and themes and details which focus on one design idea. |
