Arts of Citizenship Announces 2012 Graduate Student Summer Internships in Public Scholarship
Arts of Citizenship is pleased to announce several full-time professional development opportunities in southeast Michigan that enable graduate students to explore how they might apply their knowledge, skills, and values to careers outside the Academy, while strengthening relationships and building experience.
Host sites include the Arab American National Museum, the University of Michigan Detroit Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, 826michigan, and the Historical Society of Michigan.
The deadline for applications is Monday, March 19, 2012 at 5:00 pm. Doctoral students from the arts, design, and humanities in the early stages of their academic career are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants should e-mail a resume and thoughtfully-written cover letter to Elizabeth Werbe (ewerbe@umich.edu), Program Manager, Arts of Citizenship, University of Michigan, Rackham Graduate School, 915 E. Washington Street, Suite 0566, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. Please specify the organization that interests you in your cover letter.
The internships are twelve weeks, starting in early-mid May. Students who complete an internship will receive a stipend of $6,000. Participants are required to attend 6 two-hour professional development seminars held in Ann Arbor every two weeks. The dates of these seminars are May 16, May 30, June 13, June 27, July 11, and July 25. By the end of the first week of the internship, students will develop a detailed work plan in conjunction with their site supervisor that is approved by the Arts of Citizenship program manager.
Arts of Citizenship is a Rackham-affiliated unit that supports University of Michigan graduate students and faculty who are enriching civic life and creating new knowledge through partnerships with area schools, cultural institutions, government, and community groups. The Summer Internships in Public Scholarship are an excellent opportunity for graduate students who are interested in collaborating with community partners and exploring professional opportunities in museums, nonprofits, cultural agencies, and related organizations.
