Kicked Out, Moving Up: Slum Clearance, Public Housing & 97 Orchard Street

Through a summer internship, Aimee Vonbokel worked with the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in New York to track the movement of European immigrants from Manhattan neighborhoods to the city’s outer boroughs in the 1940s. Many landed in Brooklyn among African-Americans who were arriving in unprecedented numbers from the U.S. South. Her dissertation research provides an intimate portrait of this collision of migrant experiences.
